Agostina Segatori Sitting in the Café du Tambourin

This work was painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887.
It depicts a strikingly dressed woman sitting at a table
at the Café du Tambourin on the Boulevard de Clichy
in Paris. The woman is Agostina Segatori, the owner
of the Café du Tambourin. This was the Paris café
frequented by van Gogh and his friends. He paid for
his meals here with paintings which were in turn used
to decorate the café. It can thus be said to be the place
where the public would for the first time be able to see
the works of van Gogh.
